The Archdiocese is taking a bold step to protect the faithful of Canada from harmful internet content. Recognizing that over the last several years inappropriate material has become more prevalent and freely available, the Orthodox Church in America recommends the use of internet filtering software. Covenant Eyes is one such program, and it not only eliminates the possibility of viewing adult material, it also allows for additional restrictions on social media and video games. Covenant Eyes can be installed on phones, tablets, and laptops of all kinds.
How did we get to this point?
The great enemy of today is isolation, especially emotional isolation. Browsing the internet often happens alone. The solution to isolation is transparency, surrender to Jesus Christ, and accountability to another person. The use of Covenant Eyes increases transparency and accountability through a reporting feature that flags questionable material and notifies a parent or trusted partner. Merely having the opportunity to discuss internet use with another person helps keep everyone safe.
The cost of Covenant Eyes is nearly $200 per year. However, the Archdiocese will be supplying all clergy families with a FREE subscription. A detailed set of instructions and email link will be made available to clergy via email. Additionally, the Archdiocese has negotiated a 25% discount for all of the faithful who wish to take advantage of this special offer.
Why are we focusing on this now?
1. On the back of every new priest’s silver cross it reads: “Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.” (1 Tim 4:12). Priests and Deacons are the spiritual leaders of parish life, and by their example it is hoped that all members of the community will strive together in purity.
2. “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6). Parents are the spiritual leaders in the home. Talking with children and helping them make good decisions is what good parents do.
3. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. (Gal 5:22). As Orthodox Christians, we are called to a joyful life in Christ and in communion with one another. Having transparency and accountability helps us exercise self-control and restraint.
