New Mission in Cape Breton, NS

August 25, 2024

A little over a year ago, Archimandrite David Edwards and the parish of St Vladimir in Halifax, felt it was time to establish a mission in Cape Breton NS. With the blessing of Vladika Irénée, the first liturgy was served August 6 2023 and attended by 17 people, 5 of whom drove up with Fr David from Halifax to help sing and serve.

The mission was named in honour of St. Seraphim of Sarov, and in memory of the late husband of Mary, Pemberton who was named Seraphim. Since August of 2023, 9 liturgies have been served in Cape Breton, even during hurricanes, power outages and snow storms. The mission is located approximately 400km from Halifax, which makes it challenging for our clergy to go and serve on a more regular basis.

Even with these challenges, the dedication of the parishioners of St Vladimir in Halifax to support and help build up the mission, along with the fervent prayers of the faithful in Cape Breton continues to bring forth fruit.

The faithful of the mission have found a semi-permanent home in an old United Church, and have started holding Typika services every Sunday. At the latest liturgy, served on August 25 2024, 5 more catechumens were added bringing the number to 10 adults (not counting all the children), and over 30 people living in Cape Breton attended the liturgy and fellowship afterwards.

Glory to God for all things!
