New Mission in Kaslo, BC

December 2, 2018

With the blessing of Archbishop Irénée, Fr Nilos Nellis celebrated the first Vespers and Divine Liturgy at the new Nativity of the Theotokos mission parish in Kaslo on December 1st and 2nd, with Deacon Paul Bartlett assisting.

This is the second parish for Fr Nilos. He also serves as the pastor at St John of the Wilderness retreat in Birchdale, BC. With the increasing number of attendees and the difficulties of transport to Birchdale, the decision was made to start a mission parish in a more accessible location. They were able to rent the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Kaslo. Since the Catholic Church was serviced by a visiting priest from nearby Nelson, Catholic services were held on Sunday afternoon leaving Sunday mornings available.

The portable iconostasis was built by parishioners and secured in place for their first service of Vespers on December 1st. Divine Liturgy, with hours, was held at 9:30 Sunday morning. The new church has produced interest in the local population and, Lord willing, the Nativity of the Theotokos will grow over the next months and years. May it be blessed!
