Father Simeon fell asleep in the Lord on October 17. He had been attached to the Monastic Community of Saint Silouan the Athonite, Spencerville, ON, Canada. He retired on September 1, 2001.
Father Simeon was born Edward Albert Weare, in 1928. Called to serve God, he graduated with distinction from Emmanuel-St. Chad Anglican Seminary in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and was ordained to the priesthood in the Anglican Church. He served as a priest in Quebec and Ontario, then in Claresholm, Alberta for 11 years.
He served as chaplain at the University of Alberta, and founded the Society of the Common Life, an Anglican monastic community. He served in parishes in Nanaimo and then in Kamloops, where he established St. Nicholas Priory, which operated a retreat center.
In 1991, he was received into the Orthodox Church in St. Herman of Alaska Church, Surrey, B.C., being tonsured with the other member of the Priory as an Orthodox monastic with the name "Simeon", and being ordained to the priesthood of the Orthodox Church. His conversion to Orthodoxy resulted in the closure of the Anglican Priory, and Fr. Simeon began the Orthodox mission of St. Nicholas in Kamloops, continuing his counselling ministry to street people, cancer victims and others, and conducting monthly quiet day retreats under the name "the Sheltering Tree".
After a long battle with cancer and ill health, Fr. Simeon reposed October 17, 2011, at 83 years of age. He is survived by his loving family Frances Kehler, Glen Weare, Cynthia Weare, and Vance Weare. May his memory be eternal!
Funeral Services for Igumen Simeon [Weare] was celebrated at All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church, KAMLOOPS, BC, CANADA on Tuesday, October 24, 2011.
Archpriest Lawrence Farley presided at the funeral, assisted by the priest-in-charge of All Saints Church, Archpriest Mykola Sawchenko.
May Father Simeon’s memory be eternal!
