The parish of St. Herman of Alaska in Edmonton began with a small group of faithful under the zealous leadership of Fr. Yaroslav Roman in 1977. For six months the faithful worshipped in a home until property was purchased on Ellerslie Rd. in southeast Edmonton. A chapel was fashioned in the garage where the parish worshipped until 1982.

Later, property was purchased at 10320 - 147 St. and converted into a church. The parish increased in size and ministry during this time under the leadership of Fr. Stephen Keaschuk. In 1997 a new temple was built at 9930 - 167 St. in Edmonton's west end

In December 1999, His Beatitude, Metropolitan Theodosius consecrated the temple and the altar. In December of 2002, by decree of the ruling Bishop, St. Herman of Alaska Church was elevated to the status of Sobor. In 2002, the Sobor of St. Herman of Alaska celebrated its 25th Anniversary with special events in both August and December on the feast days of St. Herman, the Elder and Wonder-worker of Alaska. A weekly bulletin is published and e-mailed to members and friends of the parish. The web site, http://sthermans.ca, was established in 1999.

Today, by the grace of God, the parish continues to grow in numbers, from a cross-section of social, economic and cultural backgrounds. The Sobor of St. Herman of Alaska also extends help and hospitality to St. Tikhon's Mission Station, which was founded by the Archpriest Vasyl Kolega to minister to new immigrants from post-soviet countries. Services are in Slavonic, and the mission follows the Old Calendar. For the schedule of services please contact the Rector of the Sobor of St. Herman of Alaska, Archimandrite Alexander (Pihach).
