Announcement of the January 2009 on-line Canadian Journal of Orthodox Christianity !

This issue is centred on THE ORTHODOX CHURCH IN CANADA.

Two stimulating and timely reflections by His Beatitude, Metropolitan Jonah are re-printed here for easy access and because of their relevance and potential impact regarding the present and future mission of the Orthodox Church in Canada.
Metropolitan Jonah , The Orthodox Church in America: Vision, Vocation, Mission, Identity
Metropolitan Jonah , Episcopacy, Primacy, and Mother Churches

In addition, two short, personal stories strikingly put before us challenges regarding the call, opportunity, and responsibility of being members of the Orthodox Church in Canada at this time.
The first article is re-printed from Synaxis with the permission of the author, Dr. John Hadjinicolaou, who is well known for his great labours on behalf of the Archdiocese of Canada and the Orthodox faith in Canada, as publisher of Alexander Press in Montreal, and for his teaching and articles in many places.
This article speaks a message of its own which is very poignant for us all, but for me also it calls forth a challenge to learn from, and respond to, the aboriginal peoples of Canada, who have been here so long and whose presence and wisdom call us back to our relationship with God and His creation at this time.

The second short personal account is of a little-known incident in which the potential for an autocephalous Orthodox Church in Canada was missed.   The account of this incident, with reflections on the missed opportunity, is by Protopresbyter Mirone Klysh, who pioneered English-language Orthodox efforts in Canada with much opposition.  This one short episode captures in a nutshell, the vision and life-long mission and struggles of an American-born, ethnic Ukrainian, to see all Orthodox Canadians turn their hearts and efforts to serving the many peoples of this country in the realities and opportunities which they face.
